The business community has exhibited strong leadership in helping impacted communities recover from disasters. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that responding to disasters after the fact is not a sustainable strategy—too many lives are impacted, funding is tight and response capacity is limited. Planning, funding and action must shift to support the implementation of mitigation strategies ahead of the disaster, reducing communities’ risks.

International Code Council Issues White Paper on “Resilience Contributions of the International Building Code”

At the International Code Council’s Annual Conference, the Alliance for National and Community Resilience (ANCR) announced the release of its housing benchmark. The housing benchmark addresses the availability of affordable housing, the quality of housing, the availability of shelter and continuity planning in the event of a disaster.

The Buildings Benchmark covers all occupiable structures in a community including new and existing buildings and both residential and commercial. Buildings are a key link in the community chain, providing support services to other functions.

The Natural Hazard Mitigation Saves: 2018 Interim Report from the National Institute of Building Sciences highlights the significant savings that result from implementing mitigation strategies in terms of safety, and the prevention of property loss and disruption of day-to-day life.

The International Code Council and the Alliance for National and Community Resilience (ANCR) released a new publication on resilience, Building Community Resilience through Modern Model Building Codes. Intended for use by policymakers and government administrators, this unique publication is an approachable compendium of information, graphics, photos and statistics related to community resilience and the building codes.
